flowers in the house

I got a bundle of beauty from Bow Street Flowers last week.
First I put them all in a blue vase.
Each flower is intriguing. No wonder I get obsessed with them.

I took a few and played around with various vases.

 And with paintings.
This black and white one by my son Matt seemed like a good backdrop for flowers.
The orange vase and blowzy peony didn't work with this group
so it went on the dining room table where it is holding its own nicely.

The pink roses add warmth but aren't distracting.
The rounded old fashioned flowers and curvy vases work nicely with the sharp modern painting.
Also that cool sculptural branch!

I love this Persian vase, though I'm not sure about its colors and design here.
The trailing vine takes my breath away.

After all those cool black and whites it's nice to get back to some hot pinks.
There are flowers everywhere I look these days.
I think June is my favorite month.

  1. Beautiful Jen. Your vases +Shelly's flowers + Matt's painting make for visual harmony.

And I live for visual harmony.

Thanks for joining and and letting us see the flowers up close and personal.

  2. Hello Jen,

How intriguing it is that with every new position the flowers look so very different.

The painting by your son is most interesting and does look good as a background with the rather stark black vase in front. The orange vase and Peony did not work with it. You were right to give it its own space elsewhere. Peonies are such flamboyant divas, they cannot bear to share the stage!

    1. Me too. I'd never think of buying an orange vase, but I found that one at an auction. It's very mid century looking.

  4. Hello Jen, You really have the artist's eye for arranging flowers. Matt's painting, in addition to enhancing the flowers (or vice versa) passes the "I would have it on my own wall" test.

    1. Thank you, Jim. I will pass along your words to Matt. He is self-taught and doesn't realize how talented he is.

  5. Dear Jen,
Love your son's painting. ..it does indeed lend to the backdrop of your stunning flower arrangements and the vases.
Life is good Jen. Its even better, when we achieve the things that we love to do.
    super photos..
Flowers are truly fascinating, as you say.. some are so exotic . I learn about new flowers from blogging friends and from my own gardening.. I had no time for it when i was younger, with the 4 children. Now i have time to give to my garden.
    lovely post Jen.
    wishing you a happy Monday

  9. Everything looks beautiful Jen. You've gotten so good at this. I like all of your vase combinations and they all look great in front of the painting. I'm playing catch up, was away for a few days and completely unplugged, kind of nice actually.

    1. Hi Amelia! I've learned a lot from our blogger friends. (Hi Jane and Shelley.)

I think it's really good to unplug occasionally.

  10. It's fun observing your thought processes through your photos of the flower arrangements. You have a better eye than I, but I wonder that you didn't put just the black vase with the white peony next to Matt's interesting work of art. But then you were using the art to highlight the flowers, not the flowers to highlight the art. I guess.

    1. Not sure what I was doing. :)
I did just what you suggested, with the other black vase with some mountain laurel in nearby, and it looked really good, but the picture I took wasn't so good (the white flowers against the white wall). Anyway, that's the arrangement that stayed.

    2. Shelley, what beautiful "material" indeed! I think my next trip to Arlington (MA) will have to include a visit. Would you be OK with my bringing a well-behaved 3 year old grandson with his watchful nanny? He does love bunnies!

  17. All stunning -- your painter's eye really shows here, Jen. I like #5 best, though it's hard to choose from such a beautiful array. We are in Peony Heaven here, though it's short lived. Love the swoony fragrance...
Cheers & thanks for a great entry,
